Recipe 10: Soya Burgers

Whenever we think about breakfast, boring options comes to mind. But weekend breakfast require some indulgence and creativity.

Wanting to experiment with restaurant quality food and to impress my husband, I came up with soya burgers on one Sunday.

And since then the recipe is a hit in my house.

  1.  2 cups soya granules (boiled and drained)
  2. 1 large boiled potato
  3. 1 cup chopped onions
  4. 2 tsp. zeera/cumin powder
  5. 1 tsp. ginger paste'
  6. 2 tsp. lemon juice
  7. 4 green chillies chopped
  8. 1 tsp. red chilly powder
  9. 2 tsp. black pepper powder
  10. besan/chickpea for binding
  11. salt to taste
  12. store bought burger buns
  13. slices of onions and tomatoes (optional)

In a large bowl, mash soya granules, potato, onions, green chillies, ginger paste, lemon juice, zeera powder, red chilly powder, black pepper powder, salt and enough besan for binding.
Form patties according to the size of the burgers and shallow fry them in a pan.
Lightly toast the burger buns.
Spread tomato ketchup on one side and mayonnaise on the other.
Place a patty on the mayonnaise side and top it with slices of onion and tomatoes.
Place the other half of the bun and serve warm with chips or hot beverage.

  • One beaten egg is also a good option for binding the patty mixture and enhancing the burger taste.
  • One egg omlette can be placed with a slice of cheese inside the burger.
