Recipe 7: Spicy Fish Curry (Bengali Style)

This lunch or dinner preparation is extremely delicious for those who crave fish, gravy for rice, and spicy food.

The dish is sweet, sour and very spicy. It has a thin gravy and best suited for zeera/cumin rice or vegetable pulao.

Ingredients:

  1. 4 fish pieces (rohu)
  2. 3 medium size onions sliced
  3. 2 large red tomatoes
  4. 1 tbsp. red chilly powder
  5. 7-8 garlic cloves chopped
  6. 2 inch ginger grated
  7. 3-4 green chillies slit
  8. 2 tsp haldi/turmeric powder
  9. salt to taste
  10. 2 tsp. sugar
  11. coriander leaves for garnish (optional)

Method:

In a wok or kadhai, add vegetable oil and saute onions, garlic and ginger.
When onions turn slight brown add in the tomatoes, red chilly powder, haldi, sugar and salt.
The salt will extract water from tomatoes.
Still if required add more water and cook till oil separates.
Fry the fish with salt and haldi and then add it to the gravy.
Cover and cook till the oil separates from the gravy.
Finish off with chopped coriander leaves.
