Recipe 22: Chicken Kali Mirch (Chicken in Black Pepper Sauce)

This chicken recipe is extremely easy and effortless. I have had this made several times for a normal dinner as well as for parties. And, it is a hit each time.

Prepare it a few hours before or overnight, and Chicken Kali Mirch or Black Pepper Chicken is ready to impress a crowd.


  1. 1 kilo Chicken with bones cut into medium size pieces
  2. 3 medium size onions
  3. 4 green chillies
  4. 1 inch ginger
  5. 7-8 garlic cloves
  6. 1 cup sour yogurt
  7. 2 tbsp. whole black pepper corns or kali mirch
  8. 7-8 laung or cloves
  9. 5 elaichi or cardamom
  10. 1/2 cup fresh cream
  11. salt to taste


In a mixer grinder, add onions, green chillies, ginger, garlic, cardamom, cloves and black pepper. Grind them into a smooth paste.
Add this to the washed chicken pieces.
And mix thoroughly.
Add yogurt.
Keep this marinated chicken in the fridge for atleast 4 hours or overnight.
The next day, heat some oil in a deep vessel.
Add the whole chicken with its marination.
Cook on high flame.
The chicken will splatter, therefore, cover and cook till the chicken is cooked and oil surfaces.
This dish does not require additional water as it doesn't have a thin gravy. The water secreted from the chicken will be enough to make the chicken tender and provide thick gravy in the end.
Add salt and cook till chicken tenderizes.
Finish off with cream on top and serve it with roti, paratha or naan.
